Best laptop brands in Nigeria

When it comes to laptops, brands are not just names. And there’s a reason why some brands are more popular than others. It’s not mere coincidence; it speaks volumes about quality. But this isn’t true all the time; some little-known brands can offer better products than well-known brands. With that in mind, let’s now look at some of the best laptop brands available in Nigeria, and what makes each one stand out.

Apple

Apple laptops, though not widely used in Nigeria due to their expensive prices, are made with unmatchable capabilities. They have awesome designs, impressive audio performance and excellent displays. And contrary to what most Nigerians think, they are very easy to use. And more importantly, they offer great performance and have long battery life. Their biggest downside is their above-average prices, but Apple laptops are actually worth their cost.

HP

Arguably the most popular laptop brand in Nigeria, HP prides itself on consistently producing durable laptops that offer impressive performance and cut across all price points and sizes. HP laptops are versatile and offer a lot of cutting-edge features and designs. And they have batteries that deliver at top capacity for years after purchase.

Dell

Offering products at better prices than HP laptops, Dell is one of the world’s most respected companies in the area of computer manufacturing. If durability, versatility, and value are what you want from your laptop, then you won’t go wrong with a Dell. Like HP, they also have a wide range of products that cut across various sizes, price points, and specifications.

Lenovo

This brand has evolved into a well-respected one in the laptop world, and it’s becoming more and more popular even here in Nigeria. They also have durable products that are perfectly suitable for business and other purposes. They are also affordable and come with clear, sharp displays that even other brands won’t provide at the same price.

Acer

This brand is known for affordable prices, yet good quality. While their offers might not be as durable as HP, Dell and Lenovo laptops, Acer laptops will still give you good value for your money.

Asus

This is another very good laptop brand, but their laptops are not really popular here in Nigeria. So, if you come across an Asus laptop, know that you’ve found a good quality product. But the problem with such products that are not common in Nigeria is unavailability of spare parts and repair expertise whenever the need arises.

Things to consider when buying a laptop in Nigeria

There are many options out there when it comes to choosing a laptop in Nigeria. But not all of them are suitable for you, so you need to carefully select the right option. Here are some factors you must consider when buying a new laptop in Nigeria.

Operating system: Windows vs. Mac vs. Android

For starters, Apple laptops and computers run on the Mac OS, while computers by most other brands run on Windows. But lately, there has been an increase in the number of Android laptops surfacing in the market. For now, Android laptops still come with a good number of limitations and they barely have any advantage over Android smartphones and tablets. So, if what you really want is a computer that will carry out most tasks done handled with computers, avoid Android laptops for now.

Apple laptops are for those who have a thing for sophisticated stuff and love to be unique in everything. Although these laptops have impressive battery life and can do everything you need a computer for, they are usually very expensive are difficult to fix in Nigeria if they have problems. In addition, the Mac OS isn’t compatible with Windows applications, which means you won’t be able to share software and files with most other computer users in Nigeria, since Windows is the most common computer OS here.

Windows is the best option for anyone here in Nigeria. Aside that it’s what most people are used to, using it means you’ll be able to run most software packages and files available in Nigeria. And you won’t have issues fixing your computer whenever it develops a software problem. So, unless you have a strong reason to do otherwise, we recommend that you go with a laptop that runs on the Windows OS.

Size: Full-size laptop vs. Mini Laptop (Netbook)

Mini laptops are becoming more and more popular in Nigeria, and people love them because they are portable and can perform virtually any computing task under the sun. And going by their smaller size, it’s not surprising that they cost less than laptops. However, they come with some downsides. First, they have no CD/DVD drives, so you have to attach an external drive if you need to use one (but the truth is, most people rarely need CD/DVD drives these days). Secondly, mini laptops generally have weaker specifications (processor speed, RAM, etc.) when compared with full-size laptops. And thirdly, mini laptops don’t offer as much screen real estate as you’ll get from a laptop. Of course, there’s a clear difference between a 10.1-inch display and a 15.6-inch display.

If what you’re looking for is a simple computer that you can use for typing, internet browsing, watching videos, playing some “light” games, and doing some other computing tasks, you’d be fine with a mini laptop. But if you’re a web designer, architect, graphics designer, programmer, or other professional needs a large display, go for a full-size laptop. Also, if you’re a gaming addict or frequently run some heavy applications or games, you’d be better off with a full-size laptop.

Note, however, that are moderate-sized options in between mini laptops and full-size laptops. Usually, these computers have 13 or 14-inch displays, and they have the same powerful specs that are found in full-sized laptops. So, if you think mini laptops are too small and full-sized laptops are also too big for you, chances are you’d love to go with these medium-sized options. And for those who are sticklers for large displays, there are also 17-inch laptops, which are ideal for home or office use and are cumbersome to carry around.

Processor

Your laptop’s processor determines how quickly it will be able to run applications. If you’re planning to use your laptop for simple tasks like watching videos, typing text, and surfing the web, you don’t need to be too serious about this (even at that, you don’t know when you’ll have heavy tasks at hand). But if you’re using your laptop for heavy tasks like coding, website development, architectural and concept designs, and so on, you’ll need a top-notch processor that will provide impressive overall performance.

Even though we still have a good number of Intel Celeron, AMD A and other low-end processors around, we’d advise you not to settle for anything less than a Core i3 processor, which will give you good performance output. But then, the standard now is Core i5, which offers better performance, but costs more than Core i3. So, we recommend that you go for a Core i5 processor if you can afford it. In fact, if you can’t afford it, try to afford it (LOL!). Well, if you still can’t afford it, go for Core i3, which is the lowest you should go.

But if you have extra cash to spend on a laptop, you can go a step higher by opting for a laptop with a Core i7 processor. But if you’re really not going to use your computer for very heavy gaming and computing tasks, you really don’t need this, and you’re well covered with a Core i5. Besides, Core i7 laptop take up higher wattage.

Memory: RAM and storage drive

There are two memory compartments on a laptop, the random access memory (RAM) and the storage drive, more commonly known as the hard drive. The RAM is the faculty in your computer that holds applications that are currently running. So, a higher RAM can hold more applications than a smaller RAM and still allow for smooth running of each application.

Your RAM requirement would depend on what tasks you intend to use your laptop for. If you do no more than light tasks, then you should be fine with a 4GB RAM laptop. But you can go higher to 6GB, 8GB, 12GB, or even 16GB depending on how heavy the tasks you’ll be running on your laptop would be. Note that most mini laptops have no more than 4GB of RAM. So, if you’re looking to combine huge RAM capacity with portability, you may want to consider the moderate 13-inch or 14-inch laptops, instead.

As for the storage drive, it permanently holds all the information and files on your computer. And your requirement would depend on how much of huge files you need to store. Most laptops these days comes with 500GB or 1TB hard disk drives, although you can still find some mini laptops with 256GB storage drives.

Lately, laptops with solid state drives (SSDs) are becoming popular. These are special storage drives that run at least three times faster than the speed of regular hard drives. Expectably, laptops containing SSD storage drives are more expensive, yet SSDs are usually smaller in terms of capacity. For now, the highest capacity SSD you can get is 256GB, which might not be adequate for users with lots of huge files. But if you can afford it and don’t need so much internal storage, a SSD storage is your best bet.

Display quality

To most people, this is not so significant, but the difference is always clear between a laptop with 1366 x 768 pixels display resolution and one with 1920 x 1080 pixels. While the former will show visible pixels that can really look ugly at first sight, the latter will look sharper and show images in more detail.

While 1366 x 768 pixel laptops are still very common here in Nigeria, try to settle for one with at least 1920 x 1080 (for full-size laptops). For min laptops, a 1366 x 768 pixel display looks very clear and sharp due to the smaller display. There are higher-end laptops with 2560 x 1600 or 3200 x 1800 display resolutions, but these can be very expensive.

Battery life

Unless you landed in Nigeria today, you’d agree that electric power supply in the country is nothing to write home about. And that explains why you need to get a laptop with good battery life. If you’ll be using your laptop in an environment with constant power supply, this shouldn’t mean so much to you. But if you’ll be using your laptop on the move or in places where electric supply isn’t predictable, battery life is a big deal.

Now, note that manufacturers are the worst liars when it comes to stating the battery lives of their products. So, don’t trust manufacturers when they say your choice laptop lasts 10 hours after a full charge. Rather, you should read online review by real users of the product or ask people around you who are using the same laptop. Those are your sources of authentic information regarding the battery life of a laptop.

Most batteries these days can last at least 4 hours with heavy use and up to 6 hours with lighter tasks such as surfing the web or typing. But there are better batteries and there are worse ones. This is one aspect in which you should be careful.

Other fancy features

Depending on your needs, you might prefer laptops with additional features such as keyboard backlight (comes with many laptops now), fingerprint detection, built-in modem, and touchscreen control. These are cool features that will make you enjoy your laptop the more. Note, however, that using some of them will have some impact on your laptop’s battery life. For example, a laptop will last longer with its keyboard backlight turned off than when it’s turned on. So, bear stuffs like this in mind.
