The Global Rice Market

The world’s largest producer of rice is China. With a population of about N1.5 billion people, you can imagine what the market is like. Oddly, China is not the world’s biggest exporter of rice. Even though the country produces about 30% of the world’s rice, it is not a known exporter of the product. The country is also the world’s biggest consumer of rice.

The world’s largest exporter of rice is Thailand. As part of the world’s top 6 producers of rice, it exports 30% of the global rice export figures and is slightly followed by Vietnam, India, and the United States. Nigeria is nowhere near any of these indices as of yet. However, the country is a major consumer of rice. According to data from the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), rice consumption in Nigeria is currently around 7.9 million tons, while the country produces about 5.8 million tons annually.

The figures have indeed been troubling. Between 2011 and 2015, the country imported more than 17 million tons of rice. In 2016 alone, 2.3 million tons were imported to partly cater to the 5.2 million tons consumed that year. An estimated $5 million is spent on rice shipment per day in Nigeria, and the commodity accounted for about 1.25% of the country’s 2017 budget. The situation has improved a lot since 2017, and the Nigerian government promises a new lease of life for both rice farmers and eaters.

What the market people do is to buy the local rice and then re-bag them into rice bags branded with these names so as to sell it for the highest possible price. I’ve been in the rice business for a while so I know. Pls buy the local rice brands so as to stop this deceitful act by market people. Reject these big brand name rice cuz they are all local rice transferred into the bags and sold for 30k instead of 15-20k.
