Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo and J7 Prime 2 Reviews

Aside from their differences, the smartphones share a lot in common which you will discover below.

Design & Body

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo has not changed in terms of design as it shares some similarities with its predecessor, the J7Prime. The smartphone comes in an aluminium body that makes it look sleek and beautiful. Just below the display are the physical button and the Recent and Back buttons placed on its either side while Samsung’s logo is inscribed above the display.

On the right side of the phone, you will find the power button and single speaker grille, and the SIM and MicroSD card slots on the left. The rear of the phone features the camera, LED flash and the name of the brand placed just below the camera as well as the fingerprint sensor. The Galaxy J7 Prime 2 shares a similar design with the Galaxy J7 Duo.

Display

The Galaxy J7 Duo features a 5.5 inches super AMOLED capacitive display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. Although most phones in the budget category have a similar spec list, the J7 Duo screen is disappointing since we expect Samsung to offer better features than its contenders in the category. The pixel density is 267 pixels per inch which makes the display less colourful and detailed. You can spot the odd colour output as you operate the phone and you will need to strain your eyes to use the phone under sunlight.

On the other hand, the Galaxy J7 Prime 2 sports a 5.5 inches PLS TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 and a pixel density of 401 pixels. Unlike the J7 Duo, the display of the J7 Prime 2 is far better and it does give a great view angle. Additionally, both smartphones sport a 5.5 inches screen which is the usual screen size for budget smartphones.

Camera

The Galaxy J7 Duo features one of the best rear cameras you can find in budget smartphones. It comes with a dual camera set-up that combines 13MP and 5MP sensors with f/1.9 aperture to capture all your happy moments. The selfie camera is equipped with an 8MP camera sensor which can capture images to very good extent.

But when you come to the Galaxy J7 Prime 2, you will find that it’s equipped with a 13MP shooter as the main camera and another 13MP sensor as the selfie camera. This is an improvement on the Galaxy J7 Prime as you can now have the same quality photos whether you use the back or front camera. The camera o the Galaxy J7 Prime 2 also comes with an f/1.9 aperture.

Processor

Under the hood, the Galaxy J7 runs on Samsung’s own system-on-a-chip, octa-core Exynos 7870 with a frequency of 1.6GHz while the Galaxy J7 Duo is managed by octa-core Exynos 7885 which reaches a speed of 1.6 GHz. Both processors are supported by a RAM of 3GB to efficiently run the smartphones. The processors managed power consumption at an acceptable level and also did well to handle heavy apps without any problem.

Battery

The Galaxy J7 Duo draws from its 3,000mAh battery cell for its functioning while the Galaxy J7 Prime 2 is powered by its 3,300mAh battery cell which a little more juice than the J7. There’s no fast charging technology on either of the phones which makes it necessary to charge the phone for hours before stepping out.

If you plan to heavily use any of the smartphones during the day, we advise you go out with your charger as the two devices cannot guarantee a full day away from the wall socket.

Other features

Both devices sport the same features which are: fingerprint scanner (front mounted), accelerometer and proximity sensors.

Colours

The Galaxy J7 Duo is available in the colour variants of: Black, Gold, Rose Gold and White. But if you’re interested in the J7 Prime 2, you can purchase the device in any of the following colours namely Black, Gold and Rose Gold.

Summary

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo and J7 Prime 2 are Samsung’s offerings for the budget segment of the phone market in 2018 and the devices have ticked most of the boxes of our minimum expectations. Now you can make your choice based on the specs that meets your needs.
