SLOT Nigeria Laptops: Things to Consider Before Buying

With so many different laptops available at SLOT Nigeria’s outlets, it’s quite difficult to make the right choice if you don’t know exactly what you want or what you’re looking for. To help you make the right choice, we’ve put together some of the most important factors you should consider and decide on before making your purchase.

1. Size

The size of your laptop would depend on what you would use the laptop for and whether you’d be moving it around or not. If you’d be taking the laptop along with you to your office, school, or other places very often, then consider going for a portable laptop with 11 to 13 inches display size.

However, if your work requires more of visual details, such as architectural designs, graphics design, and so on, or your laptop would be sitting on your home or office table all the time, then you’d be better off with a larger display (15 to 17 inches).

2. RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) is one of the major factors that determine how fast your laptop works. If all you need your laptop for is to surf the web, type documents, watch videos and do other light tasks, then a 4GB RAM laptop would suffice.

But if you’d be doing lots of multitasking on your laptop, that is running several applications at once, then you’d need a larger RAM capacity for your laptop to run smoothly. In that case, consider going for RAM of 8GB or more. If your work would involve using “heavy-duty” software, then you might want to consider a laptop with 12GB or 16GB of RAM.

3. Battery Life

In Nigeria, where electric power isn’t so reliable, your laptop’s battery is a big deal — especially if you’d be using the laptop on the move. Most of the time, the real battery life of a laptop is different from what the manufacturer promises. And this is partly because how long your laptop’s battery would last depends on what you do on your laptop. A laptop would last longer when used for browsing the web and typing Word documents than when used for watching videos or playing games.

Rather than going by the manufacturer’s promises on battery life, look at the battery rating in milliAmpere-hours (mAh) or Watt-hours (Wh). The higher the number, the longer the battery would last. Generally, Apple laptops have better batteries than those of most other brands.

4. CPU

The CPU (central processing unit) is, simply put, the heart of your laptop. The more advanced the processor is, the faster your laptop would be. If your laptop is to be used for simple or light tasks such as typing, surfing the web, or running simple applications, you should be fine with an Intel Core i3 processor. If you need something a bit more advanced, then go for an Intel Core i5 processor.

However, if you’d be using your laptop for heavy tasks, then you should go for one with an Intel Core i7 or Core i9 processor. Note, however, that these high-performance processors tend to generate a lot of heat. So, if you’re used to carrying your laptop on your lap, this is worth thinking about. Also, it goes without saying, but the prices of laptops go higher from Core i3 to Core i9.

Apple laptops are generally built to handle most tasks smoothly. The M1 chip, which is found in their latest models crushes others in terms of speed and overall performance.

5. Storage

There’s more to your laptop’s storage than just the capacity. You have to also consider the type of technology of the storage. So, before you rush to buy a laptop with 1TB storage, check to know if it’s a hard disk drive (HDD) or a solid-state drive (SSD). SSDs are faster than HDDs and are now used in recent laptop models. In fact, it’s better to buy a laptop with 512GB SSD than to buy a 1TB or 2TB HDD.

Needless to say, laptops with SSDs are more expensive than those with traditional disk drives. Another advantage of SSDs is that they are quieter during operation than HDDs, which usually produce more noise as they handle more intense tasks.

6. Ports & Connections

When buying a laptop, you’ll also need to factor in the accessories you plan to connect to it. These include peripheral devices such as external hard drives and mice as well as projectors and printers. If you need a laptop with 2 or more USB ports, then be sure that your chosen option meets that criterion.

Some recent devices, such as MacBook Pros and Airs don’t come with USB ports. So, if you’re an Apple fan, you might want to consider buying a USB hub if you’d want to connect USB devices.

7. Display Quality

To start with, you should favour a laptop that is easy on the eyes, especially if you’d be staring at your screen for many hours a day. Glossy screens that come with touchscreen laptops tend to reflect surrounding light, which some users won’t be cool with. So, keep this in mind if you’re a stickler for touchscreen laptops.

Display resolution is another important factor to consider. If you have the extra bucks required, then go for the 1920 x 1080 HD screen, as this would offer great image quality and plenty of room to keep your windows in view. But if that goes beyond your budget, you can go with lower resolution options.-
