The University was founded to meet the insatiable quest of the people of the State for excellence, especially in the aspects of education. The then Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Wamakko, decided to head a team that pushed for the establishment in 2008.The team was charged to plan for the structure and facilities for the effective running of the University. The school was approved by the NUC to operate in 2009.
