Bear in mind that breastmilk remains the best feed for your baby if he or she is still less than 6 months of age, and you really should not consider formula feeding within this period — unless the mother is HIV positive, or in other medically acceptable conditions such as galactosemia.

By opting to breastfeed your baby exclusively for the first 6 months of life, he/she will be fortified with a strong immune system that will help to fight against infections and diseases. Breastfeeding also helps to enhance brain maturation and overall development of your baby. And in addition to these, breastfeeding is free, readily available, convenient for the mother, and absolutely safe for your baby.

Formula-feeding on the other hand can be very expensive. Imagine that your baby consumes one tin of formula weekly that costs N3,000. That’s a whopping N12,000 per month, excluding the cost of diapers and other baby disposables. In addition, formulas do not contain antibodies: the substances that help to build up the body’s natural defense system. And with formula feeding, your baby is at higher risk of constipation as well as infection and diarrhea due to poor hygiene or improper storage.

If you must formula feed, then you must ensure the following:

  • Buy the right formula for your child. Be sure to check that you’re buying the right one for his/her age.
  • Always check the expiration date before purchase
  • Ensure a high level of hygiene while handling baby formula. Wash your hands thoroughly before preparation. Also, be sure to thoroughly wash the feeding bottles and container used for preparing the formula. If possible, use a sterilizer for this.
  • Avoid warming formula in the microwave because it heats irregularly, which can create hot spots in the milk that could burn your baby’s mouth.
  • Don’t ever freeze baby formula, if you must preserve, use only the refrigerator compartment.
  • Don’t give your baby formula that has been prepared for over 24 hours, even if it’s preserved in the fridge.
  • Don’t force your baby to take more formula than he /she can take at a time.
  • When preparing formula, strictly follow the preparation instructions displayed on the container. Formula that is too thick or too dilute can cause serious health problems for your baby.
