A Brief about the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo
Following the signing into law, in 2014, of the bill establishing the University by the then governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, the University was officially recognized on April 22, 2015. On the same date, the institution was officially declared open as the 139th University in Nigeria (40th State University).
According to Governor Mimiko, the aim of establishing the university was to make it one of the best institutions of medical education not just in Nigeria, but in the world at large. He further stated that the university’s establishment was borne out of the passion to deliver excellent medical services. And it was felt that the best way to put that passion to work is to establish a specialized university that is dedicated solely to training, service delivery, and in-depth research in medical disciplines.
The University comprises four faculties:
- Faculty of Clinical Sciences
- Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences
- Faculty of Allied Health Sciences & Health Sciences
- Faculty of Science
In March 2015, Professor Friday Okonofua, FAS, a renowned professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, was appointed the first Vice-chancellor of the University, while Dr. Funke Oyebade, mni, a former registrar at FUTA was appointed the first registrar of the institution.
